An Adventure in the Art of Story
2.5 Day Workshop with Megan Dong and Stu Livingston
APRIL 21, 22 & 23rd, 2017

Join Nickelodeon Animation Studios directors / comic artists Stu Livingston and Megan Dong for a 2.5 day weekend workshop exploring the art of story.

This workshop is perfect for storytellers that want to infuse their practice with creative perspectives in storyboarding, comics, and animation. We'll discuss how to pitch your original content, explore how sketchbooks and bullet-journals can invigorate one's practice (and well-being), and how to find humorous content in unexpected places. Megan and Stu will share their process for making great storyboards and comics, provide technical demos, and share techniques for character and story development. Participants will practice a variety of super-fun in-studio workshops designed to help them get familiar with the art of designing memorable characters, how to think about humor, and how to tell great stories. This weekend workshop will take place alongside our April 21st opening reception where participants will have a front row seats for Megan and Stu's artist lecture and get the chance to visit with our visiting artists in person throughout the weekend.

Highlights include:
• VIP seats for Megan & Stu's Artist Lecture and Q&A Session on Friday night at Light Grey Art Lab.
• Meet other Twin Cities creatives at the Light Grey Art Lab's newest o
pening reception  and Meet & Greet on Friday, April 21st.
• Practice the process of creating a storyboard  from concept-to-execution by learning methods to pitch and communicate your original ideas.
• Discuss where comics and storyboarding converge and where each practice's unique attributes should be celebrated and participate in an interactive demonstration of both processes in-studio.
• Investigate Stu and Megan's personal creative ideation and process, organization methods using bullet journaling and sketch-booking and learn how each can improve your practice and your well-being.
• Learn to invent, exaggerate, create great characters and tell stories using a model as a launching point during a fun in-studio drawing session.
• Spend time discussing the nature of working in the animation industry, what it's like merging their animation practice with comics, and how Megan and Stu balance both.

FRIDAY, APRIL 21st (7-10pm)

(7pm) Join us at Light Grey Art Lab for Stu Livingston and Megan Dong’s artist lecture and Q&A session. Backed by the latest Light Grey Art Lab exhibition, our visiting artists will lecture about their creative practice as directors for feature film and television animation, as well as their work as cartoonists. In addition to their public lecture, we will be hosting a short Q&A session immediately following their lecture. Space will be limited, so workshop participants will receive reserved VIP seating for this event.

(8-10pm) Immediately following Stu and Megan's lecture, we will be opening the doors to Light Grey Art Lab for the opening reception of Light Grey Art Lab's newest exhibition. This opening doubles as a public Meet & Greet, where guests can meet Stu and Megan and say hi to a whole host of other Twin Cities creatives. Participants are encouraged to bring their business cards for a night of fun mingling and art viewing.

SATURDAY APRIL 22nd (9:30am - 6pm)

We'll start off the workshop with coffee and breakfast at Light Grey Art Lab where you'll get to meet the rest of the participants and settle in for our morning workshops. Megan and Stu will introduce the intimate sides of their practice, share some behind the scenes insights into what it's like being directors, working in animation, and being cartoonists. We'll discuss the weekend agenda and get ready to dive in to a storyboard / pitching workshop where participants can practice their takes on a shared premise and learn how to communicate their vision. We'll take lunch along Nicollet Avenue, aptly nicknamed "Eat Street" for it's delicious options, and head back to begin Workshop 2 on visual humor and a demonstration from Megan on her own practice creating relatable, hilarious content. After a short break, we'll explore the mechanics of comics and storyboarding, discussing the similarities and differences and how to consider the best attributes of each medium. Megan and Stu will explore their own practices and lead the group through a comic and storytelling exercise. In the evening, participants can join us for a board game night, where we can grab food and play games to our hearts content before calling it a night!

SUNDAY APRIL 23rd (9:30am - 6pm)

We'll begin our Sunday morning with breakfast and a talk about sketchbook keeping and bullet-journaling from Megan and Stu. Well discuss bridging the right and left sides of our brains and why keeping a practice for you ideation makes a huge difference in your creativity and your wellbeing. We'll transition to an in-studio session with live, costumed models and explore the art of storytelling through gesture. After a break for lunch at one of Nicollet Avenue's many eateries, Megan will discuss the key points of what makes a solid, relatable character and we'll begin our final workshop in creating an in-studio zine from the concepts we've all come up with in the previous workshops. Finally, we'll end the day with a discussion on social media and portfolios as it relates to our practices, and Stu and Megan will weigh in on best practices for their own creative lives. Our final farewell dinner will be at Black Sheep Pizza, just two blocks from Light Grey Art Lab, and we'll send everyone off with a ton of new ideas and goals for the future!
