About this piece:

On the surface, much of the work that I do in the garden goes completely unnoticed.  It can be a frustrating struggle with entropy and my own impulses for control, often leaving me sweaty and covered in dirt.  But in my garden I have also learned how to look for the first signs of green poking up through the dark earth, and pondered the mysterious forces that quicken each new growth upwards.  I have sung to the flowers that unfurl into a delicate loveliness that takes my breath away, and cursed the squirrels who raid my bulbs, even as I laugh at their charming antics.  The birds come and go, the seasons rise and fall--always different, always the same.  I carry my familiar tools with me, and some plants find triumph, while others fail for reasons that sometimes I know and at other times are a mystery.  I am aware that all of the love and time and energy I pour into my garden is not enough on its own to make things grow, or create beauty.  At its core, the work I do in my garden feels like a co-created artwork between unknowable, untamable Nature and myself.  The work I do in my garden is some of the most meaningful work of my life.

About this artist:

Born and raised in Bothell, WA, I received my BFA in Painting & Drawing from the University of Washington in 2009. Working primarily in watercolor and gouache, I create paintings that are inspired by nature, the cycles of the seasons, and the delicacy of small, domestic moments. I want my work to reflect the power and presence of the natural world around me, celebrating not only nature's grand moments but also its dear and intimate details.  I currently live with my husband and cat in a house surrounded by trees just outside of the city.
